With the passing of Prince Henrik last month, rumours are again circulating that Queen Margrethe may abdicate.Embed from Getty Images
What fueled the latest rumour was last week when Princess Mary joined The Queen for Haandarbeid’s Fremme (The Danish Handicrafts Guild) 90th anniversary at the Greve Museum in Bækgårdsvej.
According to a royal source, who spoke to Woman’s Day: “When Queen Margrethe brings Mary to an event she has been attending herself for years, it is her very clear way of saying to her daughter-in-law this is something you will be taking on yourself one day.”
The 77-year-old Queen has suffered some health issues in the past few years.
Before Christmas this past year, it was speculated that Her Majesty would announce her abdication in the New Year’s Eve speech.
Speaking to Danish magazine Kendte, Royal expert Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen said the announcement would come during her annual New Year’s Eve address noting: “I think it is possible that The Queen will say she will abdicate.”
Again a rumour that did not come to fruition.
But with the death of Prince Henrik and Crown Prince Frederick turning 50 this year will Queen Margrethe decide to abdicate?
Royal watchers will need to wait and see.
Queen Margrethe II was the first woman to be Queen since the reign of Queen Margrethe I ended in 1412.
