The event, which was hosted by Prince Edward as Trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh Award, saw the 3000 youngsters descend on Buckingham Palace for a series of presentations throughout the day.

As well as the Royal guests, there were many other celebrity guest presenters who revelled in the celebratory spirit including Max Whitlock, Hermione Norris, Celia Imrie, Ed Byrne and Rick Stein.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award was founded by Prince Philip in 1956 and is currently being delivered in over 10,000 DofE centres such as schools, youth clubs and prisons. The scheme currently develops over 430,000 young people for life and work in the UK every year – 60,000 of these young people come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Since its inception, some six million people have taken part and in the present day over 100 UK employers have endorsed the DofE award as a recognisable mark of a young person’s transferable soft skills. These employers include British Gas, Asda, ITV and Google.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex were joined by Princess Beatrice in the morning and Princess Eugenie and Prince William in the afternoon. The Duke of Cambridge joked with guests that his failure to undertake the DofE Award is a “sore subject” with his Grandfather, The Duke of Edinburgh.

John Bradley, Game of Thrones actor, was among the celebrities helping to hand out the awards though it seems his biggest honour came when Princess Eugenie told him she was a big fan of the show. He described it as “amazing” that Eugenie watches the show though still wouldn’t reveal to the soon-to-be-married Princess how the show will end.

Princess Eugenie will marry Jack Brooksbank at St George’s Chapel in October.
