The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined volunteers from Crisis on a video call recently to celebrate the first anniversary of the UK’s first 24/7 crisis text line – Shout85258. The text service was launched in May 2019 by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex following a £3 million investment from The Royal Foundation.

The Heads Together initiative was the driving force behind Shout. Heads Together was launched by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry in 2016 and is a mental health initiative which combines a campaign to tackle the stigma of mental health and fundraising for a series of new mental health services.

The Shout text service is free on all major UK networks and aims to provide people with someone to talk to at any time of the day. Within the past twelve months, over 300,000 texts have been conducted through Shout.

On the video call on Wednesday, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined five Crisis volunteers and Victoria Hornby, CEO of the charity. William praised the volunteers for the work they are doing through the Shout text service, “You guys are the trailblazers, you have been doing a fantastic job keeping Shout moving forward, so well done and thank you for all your hard work; we really appreciate it.”

Victoria Hornby was full of praise for Shout, “The fact that Shout has been able to quickly start to help so many people move from a crisis point to a calmer point is down to the skill and dedication of our volunteers and the support we have had from The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and our other partners.”

In an effort to raise awareness of the Shout number, the organisation is launching a new campaign to promote the number people can contact if they need support. The #Shout85258 challenge will see participants form the shape of the 85258 text number with their hands and share it on videos across social media. Shout Crisis volunteers will also take over the Kensington Royal Instagram stories on Saturday 16th May.

If you need to get in contact with anyone from Shout remember the number is 85258.
