On 10th June 1921 in Mon Repos on the Greek island of Corfu, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born to Princess Alice of Battenberg and Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark. As a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg, Prince Philip was both a Prince of Denmark and of Greece through his patrilineal descent from George I of Greece and Christian IX of Denmark.
On 10th June 2020, Prince Philip is celebrating his 99th birthday. He married the future Queen Elizabeth II in November 1947 and they will this year celebrate their 73rd Wedding Anniversary. His first child, Prince Charles, will this year celebrate his 72nd birthday. Princess Anne will celebrate her 70th birthday while Princes Andrew and Edward celebrated their 60th and 56th birthdays respectively.
Though it is known that Prince Philip does “not like a fuss”, for anyone to be celebrating their 99th birthday is quite some achievement and deserves some recognition. Next year, His Royal Highness will receive a special telegram from his wife, The Queen, in recognition of his 100th birthday. Until then, lets take a look back at the last 99 years in pictures as we say Happy Birthday to The Duke of Edinburgh.
