The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent time in Canada from November 2019 to January 2020 and it has been revealed that this stay cost the Canadian taxpayer at least £30,000 in security costs. Harry and Meghan and their son, Archie, spent a number of months on Vancouver Island in British Columbia before they stepped back from royal duties in March 2020 and moved to Los Angeles.
Recently revealed documents show that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were responsible for the protection of the couple and Archie throughout the duration of their stay. Between 18th November 2019 and 19th January 2020, the RCMP spent at least £30,000 on protection costs.

The information was obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation through an access to information request.
It is expected that it cost the Canadian taxpayer much more than £30,000 as this estimate only includes expenses such as overtime, travel, meals, incidentals and accommodation. It does not include the salaries paid to the Mounties put on protection duty. It is thought the final cost would be much higher owing to the fact that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are thought to have stayed in Canada until their eventual move to the USA in March.
Following their change in status, the Canadian authorities announced at the end of February that they would stop paying for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s security.
At the time, Canada’s Office of the Minister of Public Safety said, “As the Duke and Duchess are currently recognised as internationally protected persons, Canada has an obligation to provide security assistance on an as-needed basis. At the request of the Metropolitan Police, the RCMP has been providing assistance to the Met since the arrival of the Duke and Duchess to Canada intermittently since November 2019. The assistance will cease in the coming weeks, in keeping with their change in status.”
