The Duke of Cambridge was a special guest this week on Peter Crouch’s podcast – That Peter Crouch Podcast. The Duke of Cambridge is President of the Football Association and has been keen to use this role to start conversations around mental health and has even played a part in renaming the FA Cup Final 2020 the Heads Up FA Cup Final – a nod to Heads Together, a mental health initiative spearheaded by the foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Speaking to Peter Crouch on the podcast about the renaming of the FA Cup Final, Prince William commented, “We’re hoping that renaming it is a big enough statement that the UK will show the world, and the football world in particular, that mental health really matters.” The podcast was recorded at Kensington Palace before lockdown began in the United Kingdom on 23rd March. Prince William even provided his guests with a curry and some beer as they chatted about mental health and how football has become a “release” for The Duke of Cambridge. William explained more on how football has become a release for him, “It is now. Since becoming a dad, without a doubt, football has become way more important than it used to be. I need to go and be amongst other guys and let out some steam, shout a bit.” Though the Duke did stop short of stating he shouts at the referee as he points out, “I’m President of the FA and I can’t do that.!”

The podcast also gave Prince William to share with the others how his lockdown experience has been so similar to millions of other families across the nation. “I found it pretty testing, trying to keep the children engaged and interested in some sort of work. It’s been an interesting few months. I’ve learned my patience is a lot shorter than I thought it was. That’s probably the biggest eye-opener for me, and my wife has super patience.” William also noted how he had struggled with Year 2 maths homework!

Some of the other things we became enlightened too throughout the podcast were:

  • Prince William’s karaoke song is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
  • He once bought the Duchess of Cambridge a pair of binoculars.
  • He does not play Football Manager as he fears he would become too addicted.
  • He’s not allowed to Tweet from the Kensington Royal account, only if he manages to get his hands on it do we see a Tweet signed W.
