After a busy week of engagements in Scotland as part of Holyrood Week, Her Majesty The Queen will be back in Windsor on Friday where she will host German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. The Chancellor is heading to Britain for talks with Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and it was announced on Wednesday she will also meet with Her Majesty at Windsor.
The visit to Britain will come just days after the England football team beat Germany 2-0 at the Euro Championships.
Angela Merkel is making a series of ‘farewell’ visits to various countries as she prepares to stand down as Chancellor in the Autumn. Her visit to Britain was in doubt over the Delta variant of Covid however it is poised to now go ahead.
Merkel met with The Queen earlier on in June when both women attended the G7 summit in Cornwall. The Queen was accompanied by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall as well as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
It is expected in her talks with Boris Johnson, Merkel will discuss Brexit and the continuing Coronavirus pandemic.
It is thought that the recent English defeat over Germany at the Euro’s will not be on the agenda.
Angela Merkel has been Chancellor of Germany since 2005 and in 2018 announced her intentions to not seek a fifth term as Chancellor and would therefore be stepping down as leader of the Christian Democratic Union, the party which she has led since 2000.
