Her Majesty The Queen will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee in June 2022 and it will be marked with an extended weekend of celebrations, events and street parties. The series of events have been described as a ‘reopening ceremony’ for the United Kingdom following months of lockdowns and restrictions due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Further details have been released surrounding the Platinum Jubilee pageant which will take place on Sunday 5th June 2022 and will see over 5000 participants from across the Commonwealth take part. The carnival-style pageant will see giant puppets, marching bands, dancers, musicians and even a trapeze artist suspended beneath a giant helium balloon.
Pageant co-chairman, Nicholas Coleridge, spoke of the spectacle and commented, “We see the 2022 Platinum Jubilee weekend as an opportunity for the country to emerge united, reenergised and renewed. It will in a sense be a reopening ceremony for the U.K, a catalysing moment of national purpose and most importantly to be fun, joyful and to entertain.”
Co-chair, Sir Michael Lockett, went on to say, “We’re not just telling the story of an incredible life, it is the story of the second Elizabethan age, a time of rapid change and unparalleled progress.”
The Platinum pageant, which will be in three acts, will travel through the streets of Westminster and along the Mall past Buckingham Palace. The first act is a military spectacle, the second act will tell the story of Her Majesty’s reign and how society has transformed throughout the last seven decades. The finale of the pageant is yet to be revealed though it is thought it will be kept a surprise right up until the day.
The budget for the pageant will be between £10-15 million though public funds will not be used for the display. The money is being raised privately through corporate and individual partners and sponsors.
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend will begin on Thursday 2nd June 2022 and end on Sunday 5th June 2022. Highlights will include:
Trooping the Colour – Thursday 2nd June
Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral – Friday 3rd June
Platinum Party at the Palace – Saturday 4th June
The Big Jubilee Lunch – Sunday 5th June
The traditional lighting of Jubilee beacons will also take place and members of the public are encouraged to hold street parties across the four-day weekend.
